Will This Game Work With My System?

Retro gaming compatibility can get weird fast. Some games work across multiple systems, some only work on specific models, and some accessories need older hardware to function properly. This guide is here to help you shop with more confidence.

Nintendo Handheld Compatibility

Nintendo handheld games can be confusing because several systems share similar names, cartridge styles, and branding. The chart below covers the most common compatibility questions for Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, and Nintendo 3DS games.

Game Type Works On Does Not Work On Notes
Original Game Boy Games
Usually grey cartridges
Yes: Original Game Boy, Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Advance SP, Super Game Boy No: Game Boy Micro, Nintendo DS, DS Lite, DSi, 2DS, 3DS These are the classic non-transparent Game Boy cartridges. Some original Game Boy games may display enhanced colour on Game Boy Color.
Dual-Mode Game Boy Color Games
Usually black cartridges
Yes: Original Game Boy, Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Advance SP, Super Game Boy No: Game Boy Micro, Nintendo DS, DS Lite, DSi, 2DS, 3DS These games are enhanced for Game Boy Color but can still play on original Game Boy systems in greyscale.
Game Boy Color Only Games
Usually clear or transparent cartridges
Yes: Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Advance SP No: Original Game Boy, Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Micro, Nintendo DS, DS Lite, DSi, 2DS, 3DS These require Game Boy Color hardware. They also lack the cartridge notch used by original Game Boy and Game Boy Pocket systems.
Game Boy Advance Games Yes: Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Advance SP, Game Boy Micro, Nintendo DS, Nintendo DS Lite No: Original Game Boy, Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Color, DSi, DSi XL, 2DS, 3DS Nintendo DS and DS Lite systems have a Game Boy Advance slot. DSi, 2DS, and 3DS systems do not.
Nintendo DS Games Yes: Nintendo DS, DS Lite, DSi, DSi XL, 2DS, 3DS, 3DS XL, New 2DS XL, New 3DS, New 3DS XL Exceptions: Some games or features require the Game Boy Advance slot. Most DS games work on DSi and 3DS family systems, but features that require the GBA slot will not work on systems without that slot.
Nintendo 3DS Games Yes: 3DS, 3DS XL, 2DS, New 2DS XL, New 3DS, New 3DS XL No: Nintendo DS, DS Lite, DSi, DSi XL 3DS games require a Nintendo 3DS family system. Some titles may require or perform best on New Nintendo 3DS family hardware.
New Nintendo 3DS Exclusive Games Yes: New 3DS, New 3DS XL, New 2DS XL No: Original 3DS, Original 3DS XL, Original 2DS, Nintendo DS systems A small number of games require New Nintendo 3DS family hardware. Always check the product description if this matters.
Quick tip: Pokémon Yellow is not best described as a Game Boy Color-only game. It is an original Game Boy-compatible game that can display enhanced colours when played on Game Boy Color hardware.

Common Nintendo Handheld Mistakes

Game Boy and Game Boy Color Games Do Not Work on DS

Nintendo DS and DS Lite systems can play Game Boy Advance cartridges, but they cannot play original Game Boy or Game Boy Color cartridges.

Game Boy Advance Games Do Not Work on 3DS

Nintendo 3DS family systems do not have the physical Game Boy Advance cartridge slot, so original GBA cartridges cannot be inserted or played.

Some DS Games Need Accessories

A few DS games used accessories that plugged into the Game Boy Advance slot. Those features may not work on DSi, 2DS, or 3DS family systems.

Transparent Game Boy Color Cartridges Matter

Clear or transparent Game Boy Color cartridges are usually Game Boy Color-only and will not work in original Game Boy or Game Boy Pocket systems.

Nintendo Console Compatibility

Nintendo console compatibility often depends on the exact system model. This is especially true for GameCube, Wii, and Wii U.

Game Type Works On Does Not Work On Notes
GameCube Games Yes: GameCube, compatible early Wii systems with GameCube ports No: Wii Family Edition, Wii Mini, Wii U Only certain Wii models support GameCube discs and accessories. Look for GameCube controller ports on the system.
Wii Games Yes: Wii, Wii Mini, Wii U No: GameCube, Nintendo Switch Wii U supports Wii game discs, but Wii accessories may be required depending on the game.
Wii U Games Yes: Wii U only No: Wii, Wii Mini, GameCube, Nintendo Switch Wii U discs do not work on the original Wii.
Nintendo Switch Games Yes: Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, Switch OLED No: Wii U, Wii, GameCube, DS, 3DS Switch games use their own game cards and do not work on older Nintendo systems.
Wii model matters. Some Wii systems support GameCube games and accessories, while later Wii revisions and Wii Mini systems do not. Wii U can play Wii discs, but it does not support GameCube discs.

PlayStation Compatibility

PlayStation backwards compatibility depends heavily on the console generation and, for PlayStation 3, the exact model.

Game Type Works On Does Not Work On Notes
PlayStation 1 Games Yes: PlayStation 1, PlayStation 2, many PlayStation 3 models No: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 PS1 disc support is common on PS2 and many PS3 systems, but region and model differences can matter.
PlayStation 2 Games Yes: PlayStation 2, select early PlayStation 3 models No: Most PS3 models, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 Only specific early PS3 models support PS2 discs. Most PS3 Slim and Super Slim systems do not play PS2 discs.
PlayStation 3 Games Yes: PlayStation 3 No: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 PS3 discs do not play on PS4 or PS5.
PlayStation 4 Games Yes: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 with disc drive for physical discs No: PS5 Digital Edition cannot play physical PS4 discs PS5 is compatible with most PS4 games, but a small number may be unsupported or may have issues.
PlayStation 5 Games Yes: PlayStation 5 No: PlayStation 4 and older PlayStation systems PS5 games require PS5 hardware. PS5 Digital Edition cannot use physical discs.
Important: PS4 and PS5 do not play PS1, PS2, or PS3 game discs. Some older games may be available digitally through PlayStation services, but that is separate from physical disc compatibility.

Xbox Compatibility

Xbox backwards compatibility is powerful, but it is not universal. Original Xbox and Xbox 360 games must be on the supported compatibility lists to work on newer Xbox systems.

Game Type Works On Does Not Work On Notes
Original Xbox Games Yes: Original Xbox, select titles on Xbox 360, select titles on Xbox One and Xbox Series X No: Unsupported titles on newer Xbox systems Compatibility depends on the title. On Xbox One and Series X, supported physical games require the disc for validation.
Xbox 360 Games Yes: Xbox 360, select titles on Xbox One and Xbox Series X No: Unsupported titles on Xbox One and Series X/S Not every Xbox 360 game works on Xbox One or Series X/S. The game must be on the backwards compatibility list.
Xbox One Games Yes: Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S for digital games No: Xbox 360, Original Xbox. Physical discs will not work on Xbox Series S. Xbox Series X can play many Xbox One discs. Xbox Series S has no disc drive and only supports digital ownership.
Xbox Series X/S Games Yes: Xbox Series X/S No: Xbox One, Xbox 360, Original Xbox Some games are cross-generation, but Xbox Series-only games require Xbox Series hardware.
Xbox Series S does not have a disc drive. Even if a disc-based Xbox, Xbox 360, or Xbox One game is backwards compatible, a physical disc cannot be used on Xbox Series S.

Backwards Compatibility Game Lists

Some newer consoles can play select games from older systems, but compatibility is not automatic. A game being from the same brand or console family does not guarantee it will work on newer hardware.

For large backwards compatibility libraries, we recommend checking detailed compatibility lists before purchasing. These lists may include notes about regions, digital versions, disc support, performance upgrades, known issues, or enhanced features.

Original Xbox Games on Xbox 360

Some original Xbox games can be played on Xbox 360, but not every title is supported. Compatibility can also vary by region or include technical notes.

Clone System Compatibility

Over the years, many aftermarket clone systems have been released to play NES, SNES, Genesis, and other cartridges. Examples include systems such as Yobo, FC Twin, GEN-Nex, RetroN-style systems, and other multi-system consoles.

These systems can be convenient and affordable, but they are not always 100% compatible with every game. Some games may not boot, may have sound issues, may display visual glitches, or may behave differently than they would on original hardware.

Clone systems are not guaranteed to play every cartridge accurately. If you want the highest chance of compatibility, original hardware is usually the safest option.

NES games known to have issues on some clone systems

The following NES games are known to have compatibility issues with some clone systems. This list is not complete, and compatibility can vary by clone system model.

  • Battletoads
  • Castlevania III
  • Gauntlet
  • Paperboy
  • Bandit Kings of Ancient China
  • Challenge of the Dragon
  • Cheetahmen II
  • Crystal Mines
  • Gemfire
  • Incredible Crash Dummies
  • Jordan vs. Bird: One on One
  • King Neptune's Adventure
  • Krion Conquest
  • Laser Invasion
  • L'Empereur
  • Menace Beach
  • Nobunaga's Ambition II
  • Pipe Dream
  • Rad Racer II
  • Romance of the Three Kingdoms II
  • Uncharted Waters
  • WWF King of the Ring
  • WWF WrestleMania Challenge
If you specifically want to play one of these titles, we recommend using an original NES front-loader or top-loader system whenever possible. Just because a game is not listed here does not mean it will work perfectly on every clone system.

At this time, there is no complete list of Genesis or SNES cartridge compatibility issues for every clone system. Compatibility can vary based on the game, the console model, the cartridge condition, and the hardware revision.

NES Zapper and Other Light Gun Accessories

Classic light gun accessories, including the NES Zapper, were designed for older tube-style CRT televisions. They generally do not work properly on modern LCD, LED, OLED, plasma, or projection televisions.

Works Best With CRT TVs

If you want to use an original light gun accessory, you will generally need an old tube-style CRT television.

Modern TVs Usually Will Not Work

Modern flat-screen displays process video differently, which prevents original light gun timing from working correctly.

If you are buying a light gun accessory, please make sure you have the correct type of television before purchasing.

Important Compatibility Notes

Compatibility can depend on more than just the system name. Region, accessories, model revisions, aftermarket hardware, third-party adapters, disc condition, cartridge condition, system condition, firmware, and display setup can all affect whether something works properly.

  • Read the full product description before buying
  • Check whether your system has the correct cartridge or disc slot
  • Ask us if you are unsure about a specific game or accessory
  • Use original hardware when compatibility matters most
  • Remember that clone systems may not behave exactly like original systems
  • Modern TVs may not support older light gun accessories
  • Check backwards compatibility lists for Xbox and PlayStation titles
  • Remember that digital compatibility and physical disc compatibility may be different
This guide is provided for general compatibility help only. It cannot cover every system revision, region variation, third-party accessory, clone console, firmware issue, hardware defect, display setup, or unusual configuration.
